Chapter 9 - The Surrender

By noon the following day, the storm had passed, leaving behind a world draped in blinding white stillness. Clara arrived in her four-wheel-drive truck along with Dr. Harrison to check on me after the power outage.
They found Adrian sitting quietly at the kitchen table, wrapped in an old flannel blanket, sipping hot broth from an enamel mug. His executive assistant and a private ambulance were already on their way from Albany, having finally cleared the mountain roads.
Dr. Harrison examined Adrian quickly, shaking his head. ""You're lucky to be alive, Mr. Romano. If Elena hadn't stabilized your core temperature and managed your gastrointestinal spasm, you would have gone into septic shock before dawn.""
Adrian looked at the doctor, then at Clara, and finally at me. He nodded slowly. ""I know.""
When the medical team arrived to escort him to the hospital in Albany, Adrian asked for five minutes alone with me in the shop front.
He reached into the inner pocket of his dry suit jacket, which had dried by the fire, and pulled out a thick, legal document bound in blue leather. He laid it flat on the wooden counter between us.
""What is this?"" I asked.
""The custody agreement Mara drafted,"" Adrian said quietly. ""I signed it yesterday before I walked out into the storm. Unconditional, sole legal and physical custody granted to Elena Vance. I have also signed an irrevocable transfer of forty-nine percent of my voting shares in Romano Enterprises into a blind educational trust in our child's name, managed exclusively by you. No strings attached. No visitation demands unless you invite me.""
I stared at the signed papers, stunned. ""Adrian... this strips you of your absolute control over the company.""
""I don't care about the company anymore,"" he said, and for the first time in his life, his eyes were completely clear, completely stripped of hubris. ""I cannot undo the hurt I caused you, Elena. I cannot buy back the eight years you sacrificed. But I will not spend the rest of my life being the monster who tried to control you. If all I am ever allowed to be is a distant father who provides from afar, I will accept that punishment.""

He picked up his coat, looked at my pregnant belly one last time with an expression of profound, aching reverence, and whispered, ""Take care of our son.""
He turned and walked out the door, stepping into the waiting medical transport without looking back.
