Chapter 7 - The Wolf Starves

The seventy-two hours following the gala unfolded with the catastrophic speed of an avalanche. The Chicago business press ran front-page headlines detailing the stunning corporate coup executed by Claire Vale. With the operating accounts frozen, Adrian’s business partners panicked. Men who had feared Adrian for decades suddenly realized he was bleeding, and in the predatory waters of Chicago finance, blood attracts sharks.

Adrian was barred from entering the executive offices of Vale Enterprises on Michigan Avenue. When he attempted to force his way through the revolving glass doors on Monday morning, the private security guards—men he had once commanded with a single bark—quietly presented him with a temporary restraining order signed by a Cook County judge.

Vanessa Pierce abandoned him within forty-eight hours. The moment she realized that Adrian’s personal credit cards were declined at the Four Seasons, and that his private bank accounts were frozen pending divorce proceedings, her sweet, helpless demeanor evaporated entirely. Emma reported that Vanessa had cleared out every piece of jewelry Adrian had gifted her during their brief reunion, packed four suitcases, and boarded a red-eye flight to Miami to find another wealthy mark. Adrian had sacrificed his thirteen-year marriage, his domestic sanctuary, and his reputation for a woman who wouldn't even stay long enough to watch the moving trucks arrive.

By Wednesday, Adrian was living alone in the eleven-acre mansion north of the city. But the mansion was no longer a palace; it was a tomb.

Without my organization, the domestic infrastructure completely collapsed. The private caterers refused to deliver without my signed purchase orders. The heating system in the east wing broke down, and when Adrian called the specialized HVAC contractor, the technician informed him that Mrs. Vale had always maintained the preventative service schedule, and the earliest available emergency repair would take four days.

Adrian sat in the cavernous, freezing kitchen, wrapped in an overcoat, staring at a mountain of unopened mail, unread invoices, and legal summonses piling up on the marble island. His phone rang incessantly, but he no longer answered. It wasn't admirers or associates seeking favors; it was creditors, board members demanding explanations, and journalists digging into the sudden collapse of his empire.

He walked upstairs to the master bedroom—the very room that had triggered his downfall. The room was freezing. The bed was unmade, stripped of its sheets after Vanessa’s hasty departure. The small reading lamp beside my side of the mattress was dark. The room felt hollow, cold, and utterly devoid of life.

For thirteen years, he had walked into this house and felt invincible because everything was perfect. The meals appeared on time. His clothes were cleaned and tailored. His appointments were kept. His social blunders were quietly erased before they became scandals. He had convinced himself that his genius, his terrifying presence, his sheer will was what kept the world revolving around him.

He had looked down on me. He had treated my loyalty like an infinite, free resource that required no upkeep, no respect, and no gratitude. He had truly believed that a woman who organized his life was nothing more than an accessory he could command to the sofa whenever his whims demanded it.

Now, as the Chicago blizzard rattled the tall bedroom windows, the great Adrian Vale buried his face in his trembling hands and wept into the freezing dark.
