Chapter 1 - The Eviction Notice

Three weeks after I walked out of the Whitmore estate, Vanessa was lounging by the heated saltwater pool, sipping a virgin mimosa and planning what she called her ""coronation party."" Daniel had spared no expense indulging her every whim. He had already reassigned my private dressing suite to her, filled my custom closets with designer maternity wear, and ordered a bespoke diamond necklace to commemorate the upcoming heir to Whitmore Global. His mother, Victoria, was sitting beside her, proudly showing off glossy blueprints for an expanded nursery wing that would take over my former art studio.
They were busy celebrating their triumph when the heavy wrought-iron front gates swung open without an access code. A fleet of black luxury SUVs pulled smoothly into the circular cobblestone driveway. Daniel, who had just stepped onto the terrace with a glass of scotch, scowled in irritation. He marched toward the main entrance, expecting an unannounced delivery or a group of overzealous contractors. Instead, he found four armed private security officers flanking a stern woman in a sharply tailored charcoal suit.
Vanessa followed behind him, her silk robe billowing as she rested a manicured hand over her baby bump. She pulled open the towering mahogany double doors, ready to demand who dared interrupt their afternoon. But the moment her eyes met the legal document thrust into her face, she let out an ear-piercing scream that echoed across the vaulted marble foyer.
""What the hell is going on here?"" Daniel barked, stepping in front of Vanessa. ""Do you have any idea who I am? This is private property. Get off my estate before I have the police drag every single one of you out in handcuffs!""
The woman holding the paperwork offered a cool, razor-thin smile. ""Mr. Daniel Whitmore, my name is Rachel Vance, senior legal counsel for Apex Sovereign Holdings. We are the sole lienholder and mortgage deed owner of this property, along with all attached personal assets, furnishings, and grounds. Pursuant to Section 12-B of your corporate mezzanine debt structure, your primary corporate entity entered technical default seventy-two hours ago due to unauthorized asset transfers. We have invoked our statutory right of immediate foreclosure and repossession.""
Daniel’s face flushed a deep, violent crimson. ""That's completely absurd! My loans are held through a boutique private trust out of Geneva. I’ve never heard of Apex Sovereign in my life! You can't just show up at my home with armed guards!""
""You might want to review your original capitalization schedules, Mr. Whitmore,"" Rachel replied smoothly, signaling the private security team behind her. ""The Geneva trust was acquired three years ago by Apex Sovereign Holdings. Your cross-collateralization agreements explicitly state that a default on your corporate line triggers an automatic surrender of all pledged personal assets, including this residence. You, Ms. Victoria Whitmore, and your guest have exactly sixty minutes to pack your essential clothing into two soft-sided duffel bags each. Everything else remains on the premises.""
Victoria stumbled down the sweeping staircase, her pearl necklace trembling against her throat. ""Daniel, make them leave! This house has been in the Whitmore family for—""
""This house was purchased six years ago with capital loaned directly by Apex Sovereign,"" Rachel interrupted without missing a beat. ""Your time started two minutes ago. If you resist, the county sheriff’s department is waiting at the outer gate to process your arrests for criminal trespass.""

Vanessa clutched Daniel’s arm, tears instantly ruining her expensive makeup. ""Daniel, do something! You promised me this house! You said your pathetic ex-wife took a tiny settlement and had no power left! Where are we supposed to sleep tonight?""
Daniel stood frozen, his phone pressed desperately against his ear as he dialed his chief financial officer. But for the fifth consecutive time that afternoon, the call went straight to a dead dial tone.
