Chapter 7 - Midnight at Terminal 4

Rain was pouring in violent sheets when Mara’s town car pulled through the rusted gates of Terminal 4. Blue and amber hazard lights swept across the wet asphalt.

A barricade had been formed. On one side stood Richard Vance, surrounded by eight private security guards in tactical gear and three high-priced attorneys clutching leather binders. On the other side stood Nolan Veyr, alone in the downpour, his black trench coat soaked through, hands clenched into white-knuckled fists. Behind him, fifty dockworkers stood with steel pipes and cargo hooks, ready to turn the waterfront into a war zone at Nolan’s word.

“Stand down, Veyr!” Vance shouted over the roar of the rain and the harbor waves. “The paper is registered! Silver Key defaulted on the escrow terms at five o’clock. This terminal belongs to Blackwood Maritime!”

“Over my dead body, Richard,” Nolan growled, taking a lethal step forward.

“That can easily be arranged!” Vance sneered, nodding to his armed security team.

“Hold your fire!”

Mara’s voice cut through the storm like a whip. She stepped out of the vehicle, holding an umbrella in one hand and a water-resistant digital tablet in the other. Her heels clicked sharply against the wet pavement as she walked directly into the no-man's-land between the two armed factions.

Nolan’s face drained of color. “Mara! Get back in the car! It’s not safe!”

She ignored him completely. She walked straight up to Richard Vance and his chief legal counsel.

“Mr. Vance,” Mara said, her voice amplified by the quiet authority she carried into federal courtrooms. “I am Mara Ellison, special financial investigator retained by the Massachusetts Port Authority. If your men advance one more foot onto this concrete, every single one of you will be charged with wire fraud, grand larceny, and corporate extortion.”

Vance laughed dismissively. “You’re Veyr’s little runaway fiancée. You don't have standing here, sweetheart. The Silver Key transfer was authenticated by his private digital signature.”

“Which was obtained via unauthorized remote access by Celeste Ward at twelve-fourteen PM on Tuesday,” Mara replied smoothly, tapping the screen of her tablet and turning it toward Vance’s lead attorney. “Here is the IP log matching Celeste Ward’s personal device, routing through a proxy paid for by your own subsidiary, Blackwood Maritime. Furthermore, here is the sworn confession and device forensic mirror from Julian Ward, naming you directly as the architect of the extortion scheme.”

The attorney leaned down, his eyes widening in terror as he scrolled through the undeniable digital proof. He grabbed Vance’s arm. “Richard... stop. Don't say another word.”

“What are you talking about?” Vance snarled, shaking him off. “We have the lease!”

“You have a fraudulent transfer that violates three separate federal anti-racketeering statutes,” Mara said, her eyes boring into Vance with cold triumph. “And five minutes ago, Judge Harrison of the First Circuit issued an immediate temporary restraining order freezing all Blackwood Maritime accounts pending a grand jury inquiry. The federal marshals are already at your downtown headquarters.”

Sirens began to wail in the distance, echoing off the concrete silos of the harbor.

Vance looked at Mara, then at the frozen screen, then back at Nolan. His face turned a sickly shade of gray. “You... you calculated this whole thing.”

“I do fraud for a living, Mr. Vance,” Mara said, tilting her umbrella slightly. “You merely dabble in it.”

The dockworkers erupted into cheers as Vance’s private security slowly lowered their weapons and retreated toward their vehicles. Nolan didn't look at Vance, nor did he look at the cheering men.

His eyes were locked entirely on Mara, filled with an awe and reverence that was almost painful to witness.
