Chapter 1 - The Midnight Contract

“Is that a threat?” Sadie asked, her voice trembling slightly despite her best efforts to sound defiant. The marble hallway of the Whitmore Hotel felt suddenly arctic. She stared up into Dominic Russo’s dark, fathomless eyes, watching the faint scar through his eyebrow catch the dim amber light of the chandelier overhead. Behind him, Michael and the other guard stood like granite statues, hands resting casually near their lapels.

“It is not a threat, Miss Miller,” Dominic answered smoothly, his low Italian cadence rolling over her name with unnerving familiarity. “It is a calculation. Grant Keller did not leave this gala. He walked directly toward the lobby doors, where two of his associates are waiting. If you walk out of this corridor alone, he will have you in the back of an unregistered black sedan before your heels touch the wet asphalt of Fifth Avenue.”

Sadie felt the air leave her lungs. “How do you know my last name? I never told you.”

Dominic gestured faintly toward Michael, who was already sliding a slim tablet back into his breast pocket. “My security team does not permit unknown women to seize my coat and press their mouths to mine without verifying their identity within ninety seconds. You are Sadie Miller, thirty-two, independent art appraiser, residing on a quiet block in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. You graduated top of your class from Columbia, your credit score is immaculate, and eleven months ago you spent five days in New York-Presbyterian with a fractured clavicle and severe contusions.”

The clinical breakdown of her private agony made Sadie’s cheeks burn with a volatile mixture of humiliation and fury. “You have no right to dig through my life like that. I panicked. He cornered me. I apologized. Now let me walk past your guards.”

“You are welcome to try,” Dominic said softly, taking a single step closer. The sheer physical presence of the man was suffocating. He smelled of rain, cedarwood, and expensive peat-heavy scotch. “However, Grant Keller currently owes my family three hundred and eighty-four thousand dollars from high-stakes tables he had no business sitting at. He has avoided my collectors for three weeks. If he takes you tonight, he will assume he has leverage against a woman he believes belongs to him. If I take you, he will know you belong under my personal protection. That single distinction is the only reason your heart will still be beating by sunrise.”

“I don’t belong to anyone,” Sadie snapped, backing up until her shoulder blades met the cold walnut paneling. “Especially not to a man whose name is synonymous with federal indictments and port disappearances.”

A flicker of genuine amusement softened the harsh lines of Dominic’s jaw. “A woman with principles. How rare in this ballroom. But principles do not stop blunt force trauma, Miss Miller. Your restraining order is a sheet of paper. My name is a barrier no man in this hemisphere crosses without bleeding for it.” He extended a gloved hand toward her. The heavy gold ring with the onyx crest gleamed under the sconces. “Walk out of here on my arm. Let Keller see you leave with me. I will provide you with a secure residence, handle your former lover’s debt and his obsession permanently, and in return, you will authenticate a collection of sixteenth-century Venetian oils currently sitting in my private vault.”

Sadie stared at his outstretched hand. It was an impossible bargain. She had spent a year clawing back her independence, living in a modest apartment with bolt locks on the windows, measuring every breath she took in public. To place herself in the orbit of Dominic Russo felt like stepping out of a brushfire directly into an active volcano.

“And if I refuse?” she whispered, her eyes darting toward the ballroom exit.

“Then Michael will escort you to the side alley, you will hail a yellow cab, and within four blocks, Keller’s black sedan will clip your rear bumper,” Dominic said with chilling indifference. “I do not coerce women, Miss Miller. I merely present reality without the comfort of delusions. Decide now. Keller is walking back toward the bar.”

Sadie looked toward the arched doorway. Through the glass, she saw the silhouette of Grant’s tailored jacket moving purposefully through the crowd, searching, scanning every face with that cold, predatory gaze she recognized all too well. Her collarbone ached with phantom agony. She couldn't go back to that hospital bed. She couldn't let him break her again.

Swallowing her pride and every instinct of self-preservation she possessed, Sadie reached out and placed her small, trembling fingers into Dominic Russo’s leather-clad palm. His fingers closed around hers with an iron certainty that sent a shockwave straight down her spine.

“A sensible choice,” Dominic murmured, pulling her gently toward his side and resting her hand on the crook of his arm. “Keep your chin up, Sadie. From this second forward, you walk through this city as if you own the ground beneath your feet. Smile for your ex-boyfriend. Let him see exactly who has taken you off the board.”

Together, they stepped out of the shadows of the corridor and back into the dazzling light of the grand ballroom, where four hundred elite New Yorkers suddenly froze to watch the untouchable king of the underworld escort a penniless appraiser into the rain.
