Chapter 9 - The Fall of the Mercer Dynasty

The Mercer family estate sat on a high, rolling bluff overlooking the river, surrounded by four hundred acres of manicured woods and three-rail white vinyl fencing. At 9:15 AM, the peaceful morning air was shattered by the simultaneous arrival of four federal tactical teams, three state police cruisers, and two crime-scene processing trailers.
The heavy wrought-iron security gates were breached with a hydraulic spreader in less than forty seconds.
Inside the grand dining room, Evelyn Mercer was pouring coffee from a silver pot while Frank and Wade sat across from their senior defense partner. Wade’s nose was covered in a heavy plastic splint, his eyes blackened and swollen, his left jaw wired with surgical brackets—the undeniable handiwork of Ava’s precision palm strike.
When the front doors were blown inward by a tactical breach charge, Wade jumped up from his chair, knocking his coffee cup to the floor.
"What the hell is this?!" Frank screamed, reaching into his suit coat.
"FEDERAL AGENTS! HANDS IN THE AIR! DROP TO YOUR KNEES NOW!"
Eight SWAT operators in full tactical armor flooded the room, carbines raised, laser sights painting bright red dots across Frank’s chest. Within five seconds, Frank was face-down on his antique Persian rug, his arms wrenched behind his back, steel handcuffs ratcheting tight around his wrists.
Wade backed away against the floor-to-ceiling windows, his hands raised, his swollen face trembling with sudden, pathetic cowardice. "Wait! This is a mistake! My brother is the deputy prosecutor! You can't be in this house!"
Agent Vance walked into the dining room, stepping calmly over the shattered porcelain on the floor. She held a blue-backed federal warrant in her gloved hand.
"Wade Mercer, you are under arrest for the aggravated kidnapping and first-degree murder of Clara Mercer, witness tampering, and felony assault on a minor," Vance announced, her voice echoing through the vaulted ceiling. "Frank Mercer, you are under arrest for federal obstruction of justice, interstate conspiracy, and civil rights violations under color of authority."
Evelyn Mercer stood frozen by the sideboard, her face pale as chalk, her trembling fingers clutching her pearls. "Do you know who my husband was? Do you know who we are?"
"We know exactly who you are, Mrs. Mercer," Vance replied with icy contempt. "A search team is currently digging at the old spillway foundation on your north parcel with ground-penetrating radar. We know what you buried under the concrete twelve years ago. And thanks to Ava Carter's high-resolution photography, your safe in the library has already been opened."
Two agents moved in, locking handcuffs around Wade’s wrists. As they dragged him past the shattered dining table, he looked up and caught his own reflection in the hallway mirror—broken, handcuffed, his face ruined by the twelve-year-old girl he had tried to silence.

Reporters from three local television networks, tipped off by the base public affairs office, were already lined up at the end of the long driveway as the convoy rolled out. The footage of Wade and Frank Mercer being loaded into federal prisoner transport vans in broad daylight became the top story across the entire Midwest within an hour.
The Mercer empire hadn't just cracked. It had been pulverized into dust.
