Chapter 8 - The Confrontation at Sunset Ranch

Octavio made a desperate lunge for the banker's emergency exit behind the desk, but the heavy glass windows of the lobby shattered as four tactical officers breached the side entrance, their carbines raised and shouting clear, deafening commands.

"Federal agents! Drop to your knees! Hands on your heads, now!"

Raymond Vance froze with his hands in the air, his face plastered with sheer panic. Octavio hesitated for a fraction of a second before two officers tackled him into the leather sofa, pinning his arms behind his back and snapping steel handcuffs around his wrists with brutal efficiency.

Leticia, however, didn't move. She remained seated, her hands trembling as she stared at the forged documents on the desk.

"You're an animal," I said quietly, leaning close to her face. "You killed Walter’s son. You killed two other men before him. And you thought you could drug me, burn my body like trash, and steal everything my daughter and I worked for."

A sudden, venomous sneer twisted her beautiful features, replacing her fear with pure malice. "You think you've won, Arthur?" she hissed, leaning forward so only I could hear. "Check the clock. It's ten in the morning. My men at your ranch have orders. If they don't receive a confirmation text from Octavio's phone every thirty minutes, your sweet little Valerie gets taken out into the desert. You might have survived the morgue, but your daughter won't survive the hour."

My heart hammered in my chest, but I refused to let her see me flinch.

"She's lying," Walter said, stepping into the office with the lead DPS investigator. "Her men at the ranch aren't enforcers. They're two hired parolees she paid five thousand dollars to act as bodyguards. The Maricopa County Sheriff's SWAT unit is surrounding your ranch right now."

Leticia’s sneer vanished instantly. She looked at Octavio, whose face was pressed hard against the carpet, then up at the federal badges flashing before her. The illusion of her omnipotence crumbled in a matter of seconds.

"Arthur, please!" she suddenly pleaded, tears of real panic finally spilling down her cheeks as an officer grabbed her wrists to cuff her. "Octavio forced me into this! He threatened to kill me if I didn't find rich marks for his syndicate! I loved you, Arthur! I really did! You have to help me!"

I looked down at the woman who, twelve hours ago, had whispered vows of eternal love before prying my wedding ring from my supposedly dead hand.

"You told the coroner to burn my body before noon without an autopsy," I said, my voice as cold as the morgue slab she had abandoned me on. "You took my grandfather's wedding ring off my finger before my body was even cold. You don't know what love is, Leticia. But you're about to learn what a lifetime behind bars feels like."

May you like

The officers dragged her out of the chair. As she was marched through the bank lobby in front of dozens of stunned customers, she screamed curses at the top of her lungs, thrashing against her restraints like a trapped beast.

I grabbed Octavio's burner phone off the desk and turned to the lead investigator. "Get me to my daughter. Now."
