Chapter 9 - The Final Audit

Six months later, the boardroom on the sixty-fourth floor of the Cavali Tower in downtown Chicago smelled of fresh lilies, polished marble, and pure executive power.

Beatrice Gallagher stood at the head of the long obsidian conference table, dressed in a sharply tailored navy pantsuit, pointing a remote clicker at an ultra-high-definition presentation display. Seated around the table were eight elderly men in dark three-piece suits—the senior council of the Chicago Outfit. Every single one of them held a thick, spiral-bound audit report, and every single one of them looked thoroughly terrified.

""As you can see from slide fourteen,"" Bee announced, her voice ringing clear and authoritative through the silent room, ""the trucking syndicate in Cicero was operating at an eleven-percent net loss due to fraudulent fuel surcharges and unauthorized overtime pay filed by your nephew, Salvatore."" She leveled a cold, unimpressed gaze at a burly capo sitting on the left. ""Salvatore has been reassigned to fleet maintenance in Green Bay. The Cicero contract has been renegotiated under a clean municipal logistics charter, increasing our quarterly dividend by two point four million dollars.""

Salvatore’s uncle swallowed hard, wiped a bead of sweat from his forehead with a handkerchief, and nodded meekly. ""Yes, Miss Gallagher. Very efficient.""

""Any questions?"" Bee asked, looking around the room with raised eyebrows.

The hardened mobsters, who had spent decades ordering assassinations and dodging federal indictments, collectively shook their heads like nervous schoolboys.

""Meeting adjourned,"" Bee said smoothly.

The capos scrambled out of the boardroom with comical haste, leaving Bee alone in the vast, sunlit space. She sighed, stretching her arms above her head, relishing the satisfying ache of a hard day’s work.

A pair of strong, familiar arms wrapped gently around her waist from behind, pulling her back against a broad, warm chest. Roman buried his face in the crook of her neck, inhaling the sweet vanilla scent of her hair, his lips brushing against her sensitive skin.

""You terrify them, you know,"" Roman murmured, his voice rich with amusement and pride. ""Dante told me that Sal almost wept when you rejected his travel receipts.""

Bee turned in his embrace, looping her arms around his neck, looking up into those stormy gray eyes that now held only warmth and fierce devotion for her. ""Sal was billing champagne dinners under 'industrial equipment maintenance,' Roman. I have standards to uphold.""

""You are a tyrant,"" he whispered, smiling as his hands settled against the small of her back. ""The most beautiful, ruthless tyrant this city has ever seen.""

""Takes one to know one,"" she teased, rising on her tiptoes to press a lingering, passionate kiss to his lips. Roman groaned softly, deepening the kiss, pulling her body flush against his, letting the absolute trust and passion between them wash away the ghosts of the past.

When they parted, slightly breathless, Roman kept his forehead rested against hers. ""Are you happy, Bee?""

May you like

She looked out through the floor-to-ceiling windows, watching the sun dip low over the sparkling blue expanse of Lake Michigan. The chaos of Cermak, the terror of Krasniqi, and the suffocating grayness of her old life felt like a lifetime ago. Beside Roman, she hadn't just survived—she had conquered.

""I’m more than happy,"" she said softly, squeezing his hand, feeling the cool metal of his wolf signet ring against her fingers. ""I’m home.""
