Chapter 3 - The Base Legal Strike

By eight-thirty, Jonah was safely eating pancakes with Marcus’s children next door, completely unaware of the storm gathering around his father.
I drove my truck through the security gate of Naval Base San Diego, pulling up to the Region Legal Service Office.
Captain Rachel Torres, the senior Staff Judge Advocate and a trusted friend who had handled naval civil affairs for twenty years, met me in her private briefing room.
"Willa, sit down," Rachel said, handing me a cup of strong black coffee. "Marcus texted me an hour ago. Tell me what we're looking at."
I placed my laptop on her desk alongside Elena’s detailed surveillance notes and printouts of the drained bank accounts.
"Simon has been siphoning my combat deployments funds into a dummy marketing company registered to Larkin Price," I explained, my voice steady as an artillery piece. "And he’s been subjecting our son to systematic psychological and domestic neglect while I was deployed under Title 10 orders."
Rachel reviewed the bank statements, her eyebrows drawing together into a fierce, dangerous line.
"Under the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act and Uniform Code of Military Justice federal regulations," Rachel said, tapping the documents, "diverting a deployed servicemember’s mandatory household support allotment into third-party corporate entities constitutes civil fraud and grand larceny."
"What about custody, Rachel?" I asked, my voice cracking slightly. "He threatened me last night with community property laws. He said he would take Jonah."
Rachel laughed—a sharp, cold sound that rattled the pens on her desk.
"Simon is an idiot who thinks civilian divorce courts operate in a vacuum," Rachel declared. "California Family Code Section 3044 establishes a strict statutory presumption against awarding custody to a parent with documented child neglect. Furthermore, under federal military family protection guidelines, we can file an emergency ex parte protective order in family court within two hours."
She picked up her desk phone and dialed the presiding judge’s clerk at the San Diego Superior Court.
"Judge Miller’s courtroom," Rachel spoke into the receiver. "This is Captain Torres, SJA. I am filing an expedited emergency protective petition on behalf of Commander Willa Kincaid regarding child endangerment and fraudulent asset dissipation during active overseas deployment."
While Rachel drafted the emergency restraining order, my cell phone rang on the desk.
It was Simon.
I pressed the speaker button, letting Rachel listen in.
"Willa, where the hell is Jonah?" Simon yelled, his voice echoing off the legal office walls. "I woke up and the house was empty! You took my son without my permission! I am calling the police and reporting a parental abduction!"
"Go ahead and call them, Simon," I replied calmly. "The police will certainly be interested in the transaction history of Apex Brand Velocity LLC."
Simon choked on his breath, a heavy, terrified silence falling over the line.

"Where... where did you hear that name?" he stammered, all his bravado evaporating in a single second.
"Pack your bags, Simon," I said clearly. "You have until noon to get your personal clothes out of my home before the sheriff serves your eviction."
