Chapter 6 - The Autopsy Order

The morning sun broke through the gray overcast, illuminating the marble facade of Oakridge Memorial Hospital with an icy, indifferent glow. I stood in the main lobby, wearing a fresh change of scrubs I had pulled from my gym locker in the medical annex. My eyes were bloodshot, my stubble thick, and my ankle throbbed with every step, but my posture was rigid.

Beside me stood Detective Marcus Ward, an investigator from the Federal Environmental Protection Office’s regional criminal division. I had called his emergency field line at 3:00 AM from the diner, using the direct contact number Chloe had carefully highlighted on the last page of her notebook.

""Dr. Campbell,"" Ward said quietly, his trench coat unbuttoned, displaying his federal badge and a holstered sidearm. ""You are entirely certain about the chain of custody on these tissue blocks?""

""Room 4B in the pathology basement,"" I replied, leading him toward the service elevators. ""They were scheduled for biological incineration at 8:00 AM this morning under a routine biohazard disposal order signed by Dr. Morris.""

When the elevator doors slid open in the basement, the sterile smell of formaldehyde and bleach hit us. Two private security guards were posted outside the pathology records room. Standing at the counter was Dr. Helena Morris, holding a metal clipboard and supervising a technician who was wheeling a sealed red biohazard bin toward the service incinerator chute.

""Halt that transport,"" Detective Ward barked, pulling his credentials from his coat pocket and holding them inches from Morris’s face. ""Federal warrant. Stand away from that container.""

Morris spun around, her face draining of color. ""What is the meaning of this? This is a restricted medical laboratory! Dr. Campbell, you are on emergency administrative leave—""

""I am Chloe Vance's surviving spouse and legal next-of-kin,"" I said, stepping forward and placing a stamped certified copy of our marriage certificate and the federal preservation injunction directly on top of her clipboard. ""Under Title 42 of the Federal Health and Safety Code, I am asserting complete jurisdiction over all pathological specimens, biopsy cores, and tissue blocks retrieved from Chloe Vance between June 1st and October 22nd.""

""This is absurd!"" Morris stammered, her voice rising in pitch. ""The patient died of advanced refractory non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. It is an established medical reality! There is nothing to investigate!""

""Then you won't mind if the federal laboratory at Fort Detrick runs an isotopic analysis on the heavy metal contaminants in her bone marrow,"" Detective Ward countered calmly. ""Because according to the preliminary manifest we reviewed this morning, her tissue contains chemical signatures that match a batch of industrial degreaser buried under your parking deck in 2004.""

At that moment, the door to the inner laboratory swung open, and Dr. Vance walked in. He looked completely unruffled, his lab coat pristine, but his eyes were darting rapidly between Ward’s badge and the heavy satchel hanging from my shoulder.

""Detective,"" Vance said smoothly, extending a hand that Ward pointedly ignored. ""There has been an unfortunate misunderstanding. Dr. Campbell is currently suffering from acute grief-induced stress. He lost a patient with whom he developed an... inappropriate emotional attachment.""

""Save the psychiatric evaluation for the grand jury, Vance,"" I snapped. ""We have the original soil logs Arthur Vance made. We have the duplicate records from my father's tool chest. And we have the electronic transfer receipts proving that Account 409 was used to pay off the families of six deceased workers while Oakridge concealed the chemical plume.""

Vance’s veneer of dignified authority finally cracked. His jaw clenched so hard the muscles jumped beneath his skin. ""You think you're a crusader, Campbell? You're an ungrateful boy who wouldn't know how to place an arterial line if my foundation hadn't paid your bills. You owe everything you are to this hospital.""

""I owe you nothing,"" I said, meeting his venomous stare with cold certainty. ""You turned medicine into an industry of murder and hush money. And today, Chloe’s bill comes due.""
