Chapter 8 - The Grand Council at Vail

The summit took place in a fortress of timber and glass perched high on the snowy ridges overlooking the Vail ski valley.
Outside, a blizzard raged, coating the spruce trees in thick layers of white powder and dropping visibility to twenty yards. Inside the great lodge, twenty-four men and women sat around an enormous horseshoe table made of polished cherrywood. These were the heads of the western syndicates: shipping magnates from Reno, freight bosses from Omaha, casino owners from Black Hawk, and the remnants of the Moretti organization.
Dante Vale sat at the head of the table, flanked by four armed lieutenants. His face was unreadable, carved from granite.
The double doors at the rear of the hall swung open.
Nicholas entered first. He wore a three-piece charcoal suit cut from Italian wool, his black coat tailored to conceal his shoulder holster, his head held high with the cold majesty of a crowned prince.
And beside him, her arm linked securely through his, walked Elena.
She wore a long emerald-green velvet gown that swept the floor, her dark hair falling in soft waves over her shoulders. On her left hand, the purple plastic ring sat prominently beneath the chandelier lights, gleaming beside her platinum wedding band like a badge of open rebellion.
A murmur of angry whispers rippled through the assembled syndicate bosses.
“Dante!” shouted Marcus Vance, the elderly boss of the Nebraska corridor. “Is this a joke? We came through a blizzard to discuss a territorial war, and your son drags his civilian plaything into the inner sanctum?”
“She is not a plaything,” Nicholas’s voice rang out, clear and resonant as a church bell, silencing the room instantly. He led Elena to the empty chair at Dante’s right hand—the seat reserved for the syndicate's operational underboss. Nicholas pulled the chair out, waited until Elena sat with perfect composure, and then stood behind her, his hands resting on the carved wood.
“Sofia Moretti is currently in the custody of the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Denver,” Nicholas announced, his gaze sweeping the room like a spotlight. “She has already surrendered four safe-house locations, three offshore holding ledgers, and the names of twelve port authorities on the Pacific coast in an attempt to secure a plea agreement.”
A collective intake of breath sucked the air from the room. Two bosses from Salt Lake City half-rose from their seats, their faces pale with sudden panic.
“Roberto Moretti’s faction is shattered,” Nicholas continued relentlessly. “His northern assets have already been absorbed by my logistics teams. The western corridor is under my direct control. We do not need an alliance through blood marriage to guarantee peace. We have peace because I control the fuel, the highways, and the transit permits.”
Roberto Moretti stood up at the far end of the table, his beard bristling, his eyes bloodshot with rage. “You think you can rule through force, boy? You broke the sacred charter! You married outside the families without council consent! Under Article Four, any boss can challenge your succession!”
“Then challenge it,” Nicholas said softly.
He unbuttoned his jacket, drew his customized black Kimber .45 from his holster, and laid it flat in the center of the cherrywood table.
“Single combat. Bare hands or iron. Right here on this floor. If any man at this table believes he can manage the western passes better than I can, step forward.”
Silence descended upon the lodge. Heavy, suffocating silence.
Nobody moved. Marcus Vance looked at his shoes. The Salt Lake bosses looked away. Roberto Moretti’s hands trembled against his belt, his eyes darting to Nicholas’s cold, lethal stance, then to the massive figure of Lev standing by the doors with a dozen armed Vale enforcers.
Roberto slowly sank back into his chair, defeated.
Then, at the head of the table, Dante Vale slowly stood up.
Elena held her breath. Nicholas’s posture stiffened beside her.
Dante picked up his crystal tumbler of scotch. He looked around the silent room, then down at Elena, who met his gaze with unyielding, steady eyes.
“Article Four allows a challenge,” Dante said, his voice echoing off the high timber beams. “Article Five states that the underboss’s marriage is valid if it demonstrates undeniable strength to the bloodline.”
Dante raised his glass toward Elena.
“Three days ago, this woman burned one million dollars of my money in my face because she refused to let my son stand alone,” Dante declared, his voice carrying the weight of unassailable authority. “In thirty years, I have seen men at this table betray their own brothers for fifty thousand dollars. She has more iron in her blood than half the council combined.”
Dante turned his glass toward Nicholas.

“The council confirms Nicholas Vale as the undisputed Underboss of the Western Syndicate,” Dante boomed. “And we recognize Elena Marlowe Vale as the lawful lady of our house. Drink... or leave the mountain.”
One by one, the twenty-four crime bosses of the American West reached for their glasses and stood."
