Chapter 4 - The Panicked Master

Across town, inside the sunlit, granite-clad kitchen of 1442 Highland Crest Drive, chaos was reigning supreme.

Patricia was sitting at the custom kitchen island in her silk dressing gown, her face blotchy red, hyperventilating into a paper napkin while clutching an oversized mug of herbal tea.

Affixed to the exterior front door, visible through the leaded glass sidelights, was a bright orange legal notice bearing the gold embossed seal of the Westchester County Sheriff's Civil Division.

"She's doing this to kill me!" Patricia shrieked, slamming her trembling hand against the marble counter. "That cold, vicious little viper! After everything we've done for her! After I welcomed her into my family!"

Daniel was pacing across the imported oak floorboards like a caged animal, his hair disheveled, running his fingers frantically through his graying hair. He had dialed my number forty times in the last hour, only to be routed directly to an automated carrier recording.

"She was in the hospital, Mom," Daniel muttered, his voice cracking with a sudden, sickening knot of dread that had been growing in his gut since dawn. "Sarah said she collapsed on Tuesday."

Patricia scoffed loudly, waving her hand with theatrical disgust. "She had a headache, Daniel! A little dizzy spell! She staged it to get out of cooking for my birthday dinner! And then she turns around and sends her family's vulture lawyer to throw your own mother onto the street!"

"My cards are declined, Mom!" Daniel shouted, turning on her with wide, terrified eyes. "Do you understand what that means?! The country club membership, my leased Mercedes, the joint accounts—everything is frozen! The bank manager told me the primary account holder flagged our withdrawals as unauthorized grand larceny!"

Patricia froze, her manicured fingers digging into the edge of the granite. "Grand larceny? Those were household expenses! You're her husband! You have the legal right to spend her money!"

"Not if she files a criminal complaint, Mom!" Daniel cried, throwing his hands in the air. "The corporate audit covers the last twelve months! If they trace those checks to the Atlantic City accounts, I could go to prison!"

Before Patricia could reply, a heavy, rhythmic series of knocks rattled the front double doors, echoing through the cathedral ceilings like gunshots.

Daniel jumped, nearly dropping his phone onto the floor. "It's her. She's finally here."

He sprinted toward the foyer, tearing the heavy door open with an arrogant, desperate rage ready to spill from his lips.

"Evelyn, what the hell is the meaning of—"

He stopped dead in his tracks.

Standing on the limestone porch was not his exhausted, quiet wife.

It was Marcus Sterling, dressed in a bespoke charcoal overcoat, flanked by two uniformed county deputies and a professional locksmith holding a heavy steel tool chest.
