Chapter 5 - The Coffin In The Cradle

The SUV skidded down the rocky incline, its suspension groaning against the boulders before slamming to a halt against the weathered pilings of the abandoned boathouse.
Cassian kicked open his door, firing three rapid shots up the hill to force the pursuing shooters back into the trees.
"Run for the side door!" he yelled, hauling Nora out of the passenger side and shielding her with his body.
They stumbled through the rotted wooden entryway just as a hail of automatic gunfire shredded the timber frame above their heads.
Cassian slammed the heavy oak door shut and dropped an iron security bar across the brackets. The interior of the boathouse was freezing, smelling of ancient sea brine, creosote, and battery acid.
Suspended in an iron sling over the dark, stagnant water of the slip hung the Sovereign Star.
The classic wooden vessel looked like a sleeping ghost under the dusty tarps. Its varnished mahogany was scratched and clouded with age, but its lines were as sharp and proud as the day it was built.
"We have five minutes before they bring up heavy breaching equipment," Cassian warned, reloading his weapon with steady fingers. "Where is the compartment?"
Nora scrambled up the narrow iron access ladder onto the work deck.
She pulled a short pry bar and a brass-tipped screwdriver from her tool belt. Climbing over the gunwale of the boat, she dropped into the rear cockpit and ripped away the rotted leather upholstery covering the transom.
"There's a secondary fuel shutoff valve behind the port bulkhead," Nora called out, her breath forming white clouds in the freezing air. "It's disguised as an auxiliary drain plug."
Cassian climbed up beside her, keeping one eye on the barred door below.
The heavy thud of sledgehammers began to beat against the exterior oak doors. The wood was groaning; it wouldn't hold long.
"Hurry, Nora," he urged quietly.
Nora found the brass fitting.
She turned it three clicks to the left until she heard a distinct mechanical click deep within the timber framing. A five-foot section of the interior mahogany planking slid outward by an inch, revealing a hidden cavity lined with zinc sheets.
Inside the compartment sat a heavy steel strongbox painted in faded marine primer.
Nora reached in and lifted the box out. It was shockingly heavy.
"Cassian, look."
Using the edge of the pry bar, Cassian forced the box’s rusted brass clasp open.
Inside lay two objects: a thick, leather-bound notebook with water-stained red covers, and a series of audio cassette tapes dated from twenty years ago.
Cassian picked up the red ledger with trembling hands.
He flipped through the first few pages, his eyes scanning the dense columns of dates, offshore bank account numbers, and handwritten signatures.
"This is it," he whispered. "This has everything. The kickbacks, the federal contracts, the coordinates where Sabine's father dumped the chemical drums off the Grand Banks."
Suddenly, the heavy boathouse doors burst inward with a deafening splintering crash.
Sabine Kessler walked through the wreckage, surrounded by four heavily armed mercenaries carrying tactical rifles. She was holding a short-barreled shotgun, her face twisted in a cold sneer of triumph.
"How touching," Sabine said, her voice echoing off the corrugated iron roof. "The happy couple reunited over family heirlooms."
Cassian stepped in front of Nora instantly, shielding her completely from view.
"It's over, Sabine," Cassian said, holding up the red book. "This ledger is already synchronized with three cloud servers via encrypted satellite uplinks. You shoot us, and the Department of Justice receives the decryption key automatically."
Sabine stopped at the edge of the water slip, tilting her head with a cruel smile.
"Do you really think I care about the federal government, Cassian? My family has three private jets waiting at the Bangor airfield. But you... you humiliated me."
May you like
She raised the shotgun, aiming it directly at Cassian's chest.
"You played me for a fool at that dinner," Sabine hissed. "And now your little family dies in this swamp."
