Chapter 9 - The Ruin of Grant Mercer

Grant stood alone on the stage, stripped completely bare in front of every business contact, client, friend, and rival he had spent twenty years cultivating.

The silence broke, replaced by a low, deafening roar of whispers, gasps, and the furious rustle of people standing up from their tables. Camera phones were raised everywhere, hundreds of tiny lenses recording his disgrace in high-definition video that was already spreading across social media feeds before he could even draw another breath.

""Evelyn!"" Grant screamed into the microphone, his voice distorting into a hideous squawk of feedback. ""Evelyn, what is this?!""

Evelyn walked slowly down the center aisle of the ballroom.

The crowd parted for her like the sea, eyes turning toward her with shock, pity, and awe. She walked with her head high, her emerald gown catching the spotlight, moving with the poise of an empress who had survived a palace coup and returned to claim the throne.

She stopped at the foot of the stage.

Grant scrambled down the stairs, his tuxedo askew, his eyes wild and bloodshot. ""Ev, listen to me! It’s a setup! Brooke set me up, she manipulated the files—""

""Save it, Grant,"" Evelyn said. Her voice wasn't loud, but it cut through the murmurs like diamond through glass. ""You told Brooke I was worth three million dead. But it turns out, you aren't worth a single cent alive.""

Behind her, the two Chicago police detectives stepped forward, their gold shields gleaming on their jacket pockets.

""Grant Mercer?"" Detective Miller said, placing a firm, heavy hand on Grant’s shoulder. ""You are under arrest for attempted first-degree murder, insurance fraud, and grand larceny.""

""What?!"" Grant pulled back violently, his foot catching on the stair riser. He stumbled, nearly falling onto the carpet. ""Attempted murder?! I haven't touched her! I didn't do anything!""

""Mr. Campbell’s forensic team has already processed the shear pins on your balcony,"" Rachel Whitmore stated smoothly, stepping up beside Evelyn and holding up a legal folder. ""Along with your fingerprint-covered drill set recovered from your basement workbench. Furthermore, you signed a full disclosure this morning certifying sole liability for Blue Water Pine Holdings. The bank has already initiated foreclosure proceedings, and the state attorney’s office has frozen your business assets.""

""You tricked me!"" Grant lunged toward Evelyn, his face contorted in pure, venomous rage. ""You signed that agreement! You knew!""

The two detectives twisted his arms behind his back with practiced, brutal efficiency. The cold click of the steel handcuffs echoed clearly over the stunned room.

""You spent twelve years underestimating me, Grant,"" Evelyn said, looking down at him as the detectives forced him to his knees to secure the second cuff. ""You thought because I was kind, I was stupid. You thought because I supported your dreams, I didn't see your weakness. You built a house for another woman with my money, and now the only room you’re going to design is an eight-by-ten cell.""

Grant began to weep—ugly, gasping sobs of pure humiliation as the officers hauled him to his feet. He looked out over the crowd, searching desperately for a single friendly face, a single peer to meet his eyes.

Every single person looked away.

Brooke Hale was escorted out through a side exit in tears, her career in commercial real estate permanently extinguished.

As the detectives dragged Grant through the grand double doors of the ballroom, Evelyn turned back to the room. She picked up a fresh glass of champagne from a passing waiter's tray, raised it toward the chandelier, and took a slow, sweet sip.
