Chapter 10 - Dawn of the Yarborough Trust

One year after the blackout that nearly claimed their lives, the grand ballroom of the Yarborough Grand Hotel was filled with warmth, music, and laughter. The dark mahogany and smoke-filled rooms of the past had been completely redesigned into bright, sunlit spaces of glass, white marble, and fresh flowers.

Tonight was the grand opening gala for the Bellweather Community Center.

Hundreds of guests filled the hall: city officials, dockworkers, nurses, former casino employees, and neighborhood families. Daniel Price, looking remarkably healthy in a sharp new suit, danced a slow, joyful waltz with Sister Teresa near the string quartet. Marcus Brody, now the chief safety inspector for the city’s waterfront district, was laughing heartily by the buffet, sharing stories with Silvio Yarborough, who had traded his trench gun for a glass of non-alcoholic sparkling cider and an expensive silk vest.

Out on the grand balcony overlooking the shimmering city harbor, the night air was crisp and peaceful. The distant lights of ships glided across the water, their horns sounding low, gentle notes against the evening breeze.

Edgar Yarborough stood at the marble balustrade, holding a glass of vintage wine, gazing out at the skyline he had once tried to conquer. He felt a gentle presence beside him before he even heard her footsteps.

Nell joined him at the railing, wearing a stunning midnight-blue evening gown that caught the starlight. She rested her arms against the stone, looking out over the illuminated harbor with a quiet, contented smile.

"Everyone is looking for the guest of honor, Miss Underhill," Edgar said softly, turning to look at her. "The mayor is waiting to cut the ceremonial ribbon, and he refuses to touch the shears without you."

"The mayor can wait five minutes," Nell smiled, her eyes reflecting the warm amber glow of the terrace lanterns. "I wanted to see if my former employer was hiding out here regretting his early retirement."

"Never," Edgar replied without a second of hesitation. "Stepping down from the boardroom was the easiest decision I ever made. Watching you build something real, something that heals people instead of exploiting them... it’s the only thing in my life I’m truly proud of."

Nell turned to face him, her expression softening into something deep, tender, and unmasked. "You built this too, Edgar. You could have walked away with your money and lived in luxury anywhere in the world. But you stayed. You stood in front of those guns for me."

"I would stand in front of them every single day if it meant keeping you safe," Edgar said, his voice dropping into a low, husky whisper.

He reached into his breast pocket and pulled out a small, familiar object. It was the tattered, yellowed slip of paper from that fateful night, framed in a thin, polished silver casing.

Nell looked at it, surprised. "You kept it?"

"I keep it to remind me of the exact moment my life actually began," Edgar said, looking directly into her eyes. "You spent six years saving me from my own mistakes, Nell. You organized my calendar, you managed my empire, and when the darkness came, you put my name at the bottom of the list so I would finally wake up."

He set his glass down on the balustrade and took both of her hands into his.

"Now I have one last appointment on my schedule, and I don't want to manage it alone."

Nell’s heart leaped in her chest. A radiant smile touched her lips. "Is that so, Mr. Yarborough? And what appointment would that be?"

Edgar reached into his pocket once more, drawing out a small velvet box, and opened it under the starlight to reveal a flawless emerald ring surrounded by brilliant diamonds.

"Spending the rest of my life making sure you never have to carry a gun, a secret, or a burden by yourself ever again," Edgar whispered. "Will you marry me, Nell?"

May you like

Tears of pure happiness welled in Nell’s eyes. She didn't hesitate for a fraction of a second. She threw her arms around his neck, burying her face against his shoulder as she whispered, "Yes, Edgar. Yes. A thousand times yes."

Edgar wrapped his arms tightly around her waist, lifting her slightly off her feet as he kissed her beneath the open sky, while the cheers and applause of the people they had saved spilled out from the ballroom into the gentle night. The shadows of the past were gone forever, replaced by the brilliant, unbreakable dawn of a new life built together on truth, honor, and love.
