Chapter 5 - The Delivery

Daniel was in the middle of telling Chloe a witty anecdote about a zoning board commissioner when he noticed the sudden shadow falling across his table. He looked up, expecting a waiter offering a wine list or clearing dessert plates. Instead, he saw Antoine standing there with an expression of profound neutrality, holding a thick, heavy manila envelope bearing the official seal of the Cook County Circuit Court.

"Mr. Bennett?" Antoine asked, his voice crisp and polite.

Daniel frowned, dropping his fork onto his plate with a sharp clatter. "Yes? What is this?"

"A delivery for you, sir. Compliments of your wife."

The word wife hung in the air like a physical blow. Chloe’s laughter died instantly, her fork freezing halfway to her mouth as her eyes darted between Daniel and the heavy brown envelope. The color drained entirely from Daniel’s face, leaving him looking pasty and hollow beneath the warm restaurant lights.

"My... my wife?" Daniel stammered, his voice cracking slightly as heads at neighboring tables began to turn in their direction. "There must be some mistake. What is this?"

"There is no mistake, Mr. Bennett," Antoine replied smoothly, placing the envelope squarely on top of the white tablecloth right beside Daniel’s wine glass. "Have a pleasant evening." With a crisp nod, the maître d’ turned and walked away, leaving Daniel paralyzed in the center of the room.

With trembling fingers, Daniel reached out and flipped the flap of the envelope open. The top document slid out, revealing bold, black legal typography that made his stomach violently heave: IN THE CIRCUIT COURT OF COOK COUNTY, ILLINOIS — IN RE THE MARRIAGE OF CLAIRE BENNETT AND DANIEL BENNETT.

Below that headline were the words that froze his blood: PETITION FOR DISSOLUTION OF MARRIAGE, EMERGENCY ASSET FREEZE, AND TEMPORARY RESTRAINING ORDER.

Daniel stared at the paper, his breath catching in his throat. Pages and pages of itemized bank transfers, digital receipts from Lumière dated Wednesday night, hotel itineraries, text message logs, and a sworn private investigator’s affidavit detailing every single movement of his affair over the past four months. It was all there—indisputable, exhaustive, and professionally bulletproof.

Across the table, Chloe stared at him with wide, panicked eyes, realizing in an instant that her career, her reputation, and her cozy corporate arrangement were about to go up in flames. "Daniel... what is that?" she whispered, her voice trembling. "What is happening?"

Daniel couldn't answer. He sat frozen in his luxury leather booth, the roaring sound of his own panic ringing in his ears as the reality of what he had destroyed finally crashed down upon him.
