Chapter 6 - Unmasking the Scorpion

The silence that descended upon the room was so cold it felt sub-zero.
Elena noticed the shift in my posture and hastily snatched her phone, sliding it into her pocket, but the guilt flashing across her face was as bright as a flare.
""Who is Julian Miller paying a fifteen percent finder's fee to, Elena?"" I asked quietly, standing up from the sofa. For the first time in nearly a month, the weakness in my spine vanished, replaced by an icy, lethal adrenaline.
""Damen, it's not what you think—Julian was just consulting with my father's fund—""
""Julian Miller has been trying to oust me as Chairman for three years,"" I said, stepping toward her until she was forced to take a step back against the marble fireplace mantle. ""He couldn't do it because my voting shares and Meline's family trust controlled fifty-two percent of the company. But if Meline divorced me in a scandal, and if I had a public nervous breakdown...""
The pieces slammed together with brutal clarity. The convenient late-night lunches. The calculated texts sent precisely when she knew I was at home with my wife. The sudden 'medical emergency' on the very night Meline had an appointment to check her injured abdomen.
""Did you know?"" I whispered, my hands balling into fists so tight my knuckles turned stark white. ""Did you know Meline had fallen down the stairs that afternoon?""
Elena swallowed hard, her composure cracking. ""Damen, you're being paranoid—""
""Did you know?!"" I roared, the sound echoing through the cavernous townhouse with such force that Elena visibly jumped.
""Julian had someone watching the house!"" she blurted out, her polished mask completely shattering into ugly desperation. ""He saw the medical courier deliver pain medication to her! He told me that if you stayed home that night, you and Meline would make up, and you'd never sell your diagnostic patents to his syndicate! I just needed you out of the house for a few hours! I didn't know she was actually losing the baby, Damen! I swear I didn't know that part!""
""Get out,"" I said. My voice was lower than a whisper, but it carried the weight of a guillotine.
""Damen, listen to me—we can still work this out! Julian's syndicate has thirty percent of the board already! If you kick me out, I will make sure they strip you of your title by Monday morning!""
May you like
I walked over to the front door, pulled it wide open into the freezing New York drizzle, and looked back at her. ""I don't care about the title. I don't care about the patents. I don't care if Julian burns Vance Medical to the ground. You used my child's death as leverage in a hostile takeover. If you are not off my property in ten seconds, I will release the security footage of every private dinner and every text message to the SEC, the press, and your father's board of ethics. Get out before I forget every shred of restraint I have left.""
Elena stared at me, realizing there was no charm, no manipulation, and no lie that could save her now. She snatched her bag and scurried out the door into the rain like a rat fleeing a burning ship.
