Chapter 5 - Unraveling at the Seams

The penthouse on Lake Shore Drive had never felt so cold.

Empty bottles of Scotch littered the marble kitchen island. Papers from forensic auditors, process servers, and collection agencies covered the glass dining table where Grant had once entertained local politicians and tech founders. Outside, an early December snowstorm lashed against the floor-to-ceiling windows, obscuring the Chicago skyline behind a howling curtain of white.

Grant paced the floor in his stocking feet, his hair unwashed, his designer shirt wrinkled and stained. His reflection in the dark glass showed a hollow-eyed stranger.

In less than three weeks, the unraveling had become absolute. The Chicago Tribune’s business section had published a devastating front-page investigative report detailing the financial irregularities at Mercer Systems, Grant’s unauthorized diversion of corporate funds to offshore accounts, and the subsequent debt-for-equity takeover by Bennett Capital Global.

Every contract he had personally signed was being scrutinized. The board had officially terminated him for cause, revoking his severance package, his stock options, and his corporate health coverage. Even worse, the Department of Justice had issued a formal grand jury subpoena regarding the falsified European expansion press releases.

The master bedroom door opened, and Ashley Cole emerged carrying two oversized designer suitcases. She was dressed in a pristine shearling coat, her sunglasses perched on her head despite the midnight darkness.

Grant froze, staring at the luggage. “What is that?”

Ashley didn't look at him as she pulled on her leather gloves. “I called an Uber. It’s waiting downstairs.”

“Ashley… what are you doing?” Grant walked toward her, reaching out to touch her arm, but she recoiled as if he were contaminated. “You’re leaving? Right now?”

“Don't be ridiculous, Grant,” she said, her voice sharp and devoid of the honeyed adoration she had poured into his ear for the last six months. “The FBI was at my apartment this morning asking about the press releases I signed. My lawyer says if I stay associated with you, they’ll name me as a co-conspirator in wire fraud!”

Grant’s mouth opened in disbelief. “A co-conspirator? You begged me for that title! You drafted those releases yourself! You spent twenty thousand dollars of corporate funds on that victory party at Bellamy House!”

“Because you told me you were a billionaire!” Ashley screamed, her face contorting with rage. “You told me you built that company! You told me Claire was a brainless parasite who held you back! You didn't tell me that her family owned the debt! You didn't tell me you were stealing from the loan facility just to buy this penthouse!”

“I did it for us!” Grant shouted, stepping closer. “Everything I did was so we could live like this!”

Ashley gave a cruel, high-pitched laugh that echoed off the bare walls. “For us? You did it because you’re a pathetic, insecure narcissist who needed an audience. And the moment that audience stopped clapping, you became nothing.”

She grabbed the handles of her suitcases and wheeled them toward the private elevator foyer.

“Ashley, wait!” Grant pleaded, the last remnants of his pride crumbling into pathetic desperation. “I still have the offshore accounts! Once the lawyers settle, we’ll have four million in cash. We can move to Switzerland. We can start over!”

Ashley turned at the elevator doors, hitting the call button. She looked at him with an expression of disgust that made his blood run cold.

“Haven't you checked your email tonight, Grant?” she asked coldly.

Grant frowned, a sickening dread washing over him. “What are you talking about?”

“The Cayman courts granted an emergency asset freeze two hours ago on petition from Bennett Capital,” Ashley said, stepping into the opening elevator car. “The money is gone, Grant. Every single cent. The locks on this building are being changed at nine o'clock tomorrow morning.”

The elevator doors slid shut, sealing her away.

Grant stood alone in the cavernous penthouse. The wind roared against the glass, shaking the heavy metal frames. He rushed to his laptop, his hands trembling so violently he could barely type the login credentials for his private offshore portal.

Error: Account Frozen by Judicial Order (Grand Cayman Division).

He fell back into his leather chair, clutching his head in his hands. A dry, choking sob escaped his throat.

Fourteen years. Fourteen years of having his meals prepared, his bills scheduled, his schedules managed, his ego stroked, his every flaw discreetly covered by a woman who had never asked for the spotlight. He had convinced himself that she was worthless. He had told three attorneys and a mediator that nobody else would ever want her.

And in doing so, he had walked away from the only person on earth who had ever protected him from himself.
