Chapter 4 - A Dinner in the Shadows

Hannah slipped into the leather passenger seat, slamming the heavy car door behind her.

"If this is another setup to get me to settle, Rowan, I swear to God I'll use the steering wheel lock on your head."

Caleb pulled the sedan away from the curb with a slight smirk. "You're consistently violent for an emergency room nurse."

"ER nurses deal with trauma all night. We don't have patience for games."

He navigated the car away from Mercer Avenue, heading out toward the winding coastal highway that overlooked the rocky Atlantic cliffs. The ocean churned gray and white under an overcast sky.

He pulled into the gravel lot of a tiny, weathered diner called The Gulls' Nest.

"Nobody from Rowan Capital eats here," Caleb said, unbuckling his seatbelt. "The food is grease, but the booths have high backs."

Ten minutes later, two white ceramic mugs of black coffee and a plate of warm blueberry pie sat between them on a red vinyl table.

Hannah laid her phone flat on the table, showing the 1984 municipal drainage photos. "You knew about this runoff line before you stood on that podium."

Caleb took a sip of his coffee, nodding slowly. "I found it buried in the project feasibility study three weeks ago. My uncle ordered the development team to seal the file."

"So why didn't you speak up at the hall?"

"Because Richard controls the board, Hannah," Caleb said, his voice turning icy. "If I broke rank on that stage, he would have removed me on the spot, appointed my cousin Marcus, and bulldozed the wharf with private security before sunrise."

Hannah watched him closely, searching for the slightest flicker of a lie.

His eyes held steady, unwavering and tired.

"My father started an independent shipping logistics company in Boston," Caleb continued quietly, rotating his coffee cup with his fingers. "Richard owned the docks. When my dad refused to sell his fleet, Richard orchestrated a fraudulent safety inspection that bankrupted him."

"And your father?" Hannah asked softly.

"Died with twenty thousand dollars in debt and a broken heart," Caleb said. "I went to business school, got into corporate acquisitions, and spent ten years climbing Rowan Capital's ranks just to reach this board."

"You want revenge," Hannah whispered, realizing the depth of the waters she had stepped into.

"I want accountability," he corrected gently. "My uncle thinks I'm his obedient junior partner who handles messy town hall meetings. But I'm compiling a federal fraud docket against the entire executive branch."

"And my dad's clock shop is collateral damage?"

Caleb reached across the table, his fingers gently brushing against her wrist before he stopped himself and pulled back.

"I thought I could just buy you out with enough cash to keep you safe," Caleb said, looking directly into her face. "Until you stood up in that hall and looked at me like I was the devil."

Hannah’s heart fluttered in a confusing, dangerous rhythm.

"You let me spill my whole life to you over garlic bread, Caleb," she murmured.

"And it was the best eleven minutes of my entire year," he replied instantly, without an ounce of hesitation.
