Chapter 5 - The Truth Unravels at Midnight

""Who are you, mister?""

Noah’s clear, piping voice drifted out into the hallway. The little boy took two curious steps toward the threshold, his small brow furrowed in that instinctively analytical way Dominic did whenever he evaluated a new site blueprint.

The French nanny gasped, immediately moving to block the doorway. ""Pardon, monsieur, you cannot be here! I must call the concierge!""

""No... please,"" Dominic choked out, his voice scraping against his throat like broken glass. He struggled to his feet, leaning heavily against the paneled wall. His hand trembled uncontrollably as he reached out toward the empty air, unable to tear his eyes away from Noah. ""Please... don't be afraid. I... I'm...""

What was he?

A stranger. A ghost. The coward who had signed away their right to a father so he could marry a bank account.

""What is happening here?""

The icy, sharp voice cut through the corridor like a guillotine.

Dominic whipped around. Claire stood at the end of the hall, holding a takeout bag from a nearby bakery and her leather portfolio. The moment she saw Dominic standing outside the open door, the color drained completely from her face.

In seven years, Dominic had seen Claire angry, heartbroken, and triumphant, but he had never seen sheer, primal terror in her eyes. It lasted for only a fraction of a second before mutating into pure, incandescent fury.

""David,"" Claire said quietly to the guard who had stepped off the elevator behind her. ""Take the children into the inner bedroom. Close the terrace doors. Stay with them.""

""Right away, Ms. Bennett.""

Claire walked past Dominic without acknowledging him, her boots clicking sharply on the floor. She stepped inside the suite, gently guided Noah and Lily back toward the master bedroom with a warm, reassuring smile—""Mommy will be right in with your almond pastries, my loves""—and waited until the heavy double doors clicked shut.

Then she turned back to the foyer, stepped out into the hallway, and pulled the front door closed behind her until it latched with a dead, metallic snap.

""You have five seconds to leave this floor before I have hotel security drag you out into the street in handcuffs,"" Claire whispered, her voice vibrating with a rage so intense Dominic could feel the heat of it.

""They're mine,"" Dominic rasped, tears finally breaking past his defenses, spilling hot and unchecked down his hollow cheeks. ""Claire... my God. They're mine. The twins. The socks in your car... the morning we signed the papers...""

""They are mine,"" Claire struck back, stepping into his space, her eyes blazing like molten gold. ""They have my name. They have my blood. They have my life. You forfeited any claim to them seven years ago when you pushed those divorce papers across the table!""

""I didn't know!"" Dominic cried, his voice breaking into a ragged sob. He dropped his head into his hands, his broad shoulders heaving violently. ""I swear to God, Claire, I didn't know! If I had known... if you had told me there were two babies...""

""What?"" Claire mocked, her laughter venomous and sharp. ""What would you have done, Dominic? Taken them to live in the Bellaro compound? Handed them over to your corrupt father to be groomed as soldiers in your construction syndicate? Raised them in the shadow of Vanessa Hale’s dirty family money?""

She took a step closer, forcing him to look at her.

""You would have used them as leverage,"" she said, her voice dropping into a deadly whisper. ""Or your father would have taken them from me with high-priced lawyers and left me with nothing. You were weak, Dominic. You were terrified of losing your inheritance. You would have let that family poison them.""

Dominic fell against the wall, sliding down until his knees hit the carpet. The mighty Dominic Bellaro, the undisputed master of Manhattan’s skyline, was crumpled on the floor of a hotel hallway, weeping like a broken child.

""I loved you,"" Dominic sobbed into his hands. ""Every single day. I hated myself every second I touched that woman. I stayed in that empty, miserable house because I thought it was the price of keeping my family's legacy alive. But it's all dust. It's all poison.""

He looked up at her, his slate-gray eyes bloodshot and drowning in agonizing grief.

""I don't care about the company, Claire. Take it. Take every share of Bellaro Holdings. Bankrupt me. Leave me on the street. Just... please. Don't tell me I can't look at my children.""

Claire looked down at him. For a fleeting second, the cold stone mask of the billionaire executive cracked, revealing the wounded, exhausted woman who had given birth alone in a Boston hospital room, gripping the bed rails with no hand to hold.

""You made your bed in Bellaro Tower, Dominic,"" Claire said, her voice trembling slightly before hardening into steel once more. ""Now sleep in it.""

She turned the brass handle, stepped inside her suite, and locked the door behind her.
