Chapter 8 - The Aftermath

Over the next six months, the dominoes Terrence had stacked his entire life continued to fall in rapid succession.

Without the financial backing of the Sterling family, Terrence's extravagant lifestyle collapsed under the weight of mounting debts. His luxury penthouse in downtown Salt Lake City was seized by creditors. The high-end sports cars were repossessed.

Richard Sterling kept his word; he initiated extensive forensic audits that uncovered Terrence’s pattern of embezzling funds from corporate clients to finance his lavish image. Faced with impending federal indictments for wire fraud, Terrence’s former business partners testified against him to save their own skins.

Lorraine Coleman had to swallow the bitter pill of reality. With no income and her social circle entirely gone, she was forced to downgrade her lifestyle completely. Every month on the first, like clockwork, her mortgage payment was automatically deducted from her pension and deposited into the Vance Quadruplets Irrevocable Trust. She never reached out again, too humiliated to face the family she had tried to erase.

Meanwhile, my life in Phoenix blossomed in ways I had never dared to dream.

With Richard Sterling’s logistics network partnering with Vance Global, our supply chains expanded across Europe and Asia, establishing Vance Logistics as one of the premier private shipping empires in the Western hemisphere.

More importantly, my home was filled with light, laughter, and security.

Mason excelled in science and robotics, winning regional competitions with inventions designed to help clean ocean waste. Wyatt became a passionate young equestrian, finding peace and discipline in caring for horses. Delilah developed a rare talent for classical piano, filling our home with beautiful melodies every evening. And Savannah, my fiercely determined little warrior, took up martial arts, declaring that she would always protect her siblings no matter what.

One sunny Saturday afternoon in June, while watching the kids splash in our backyard pool, my doorbell rang.

It was my head of security, David.

""Ms. Vance, there's a certified letter delivered to the front gate. From the Utah State Penitentiary.""

I paused, setting down my iced tea. ""From Terrence?""

""Yes, ma'am. He was sentenced last week to five years for corporate fraud. Do you want me to shred it?""

I looked at the plain white envelope in David's hand. For a split second, I contemplated burning it without opening it. But curiosity won over.

""Give it to me, David.""
