Chapter 8 - Breaking Through the Fog

“TEN.”

Mara didn't gently float the aircraft down for a smooth commercial airline touchdown. A soft landing on a flooded runway meant hydroplaning—skating across the water without friction until the aircraft careened into the mud.

She pulled the yoke back just enough to break the fall, then planted the main landing gear onto the concrete with a bone-jarring impact.

BOOM!

The main tires slammed into the soaked asphalt at one hundred seventy-five knots. Huge rooster tails of white water exploded into the air on both sides of the fuselage.

Inside the cabin, the overhead bins rattled violently, and several oxygen masks dropped from their ceiling compartments, dangling like yellow ghosts in the aisle.

“We’re down!” Evan screamed. “Reverse thrust engine one!”

Mara grabbed the reverse thrust lever on the operating left engine and hauled it back into the maximum detent. The remaining engine roared with deafening fury, redirecting its exhaust forward to fight the terrifying momentum.

“Brakes! Maximum braking!” Mara shouted, standing on the rudder pedals with both feet, driving the brake pads against the glowing steel discs.

Instantly, the anti-skid system began cycling furiously. The cabin shuddered violently, shaking every passenger down to their dental work.

BANG!

A loud explosion echoed beneath the floorboards. The left rear outer tire blew out under the unbearable combination of speed, heat, and hydraulic pressure, shredding into smoking rubber ribbons.

The aircraft pulled hard to the left, heading directly toward the grass verge where rows of emergency fire engines were parked with flashing red beacons.

“She’s pulling off!” Evan cried out. “The left gear is failing!”

Mara immediately backed off the left brake, kicked full right rudder, and modulated the reverse thrust with surgical precision. She fought the sliding behemoth inch by agonizing inch, muscles tearing in her back, refusing to let the aircraft spin out.

The smell of scorched rubber and boiling hydraulic fluid seeped through the cockpit air vents.
