Chapter 5 - Secrets Under the Steel

The forty-first floor of Caldwell Tower looked like a war zone suspended five hundred feet in the air. The luxury carpeting had been ripped up, exposing rough gray concrete scarred with chalk lines, hazard tape, and hydraulic shoring jacks holding up massive temporary steel collars. Giant industrial fans roared in the background, venting the fumes from heavy plasma cutters and emergency welding rigs. Outside, a howling October wind slammed against the reinforced perimeter tarps, making the temporary plastic walls groan under the strain.

Nora stood in the center of the structural core, wearing heavy steel-toed work boots, a high-visibility orange vest over a thick woolen sweater, and a white hard hat emblazoned with the gold Caldwell Development insignia. In her hands, she held a handheld digital ultrasound probe, scanning the underbelly of a massive steel flange where the building’s north-facing setback began.

Beside her, Ethan watched intently, stripped of his corporate suit, wearing a rugged canvas jacket and his own hard hat. Behind them stood Marcus Vance, sweating profusely despite the freezing crosswinds blowing through the exposed floor.

""Look right here,"" Nora said, tapping the display on the ultrasonic scanner. The screen displayed a jagged, jagged fracture line running three feet through the internal web of the steel. ""The steel didn't fail because of wind load alone. This isn't ASTM A992 structural grade. This is cheap, re-rolled industrial scrap with an iron content lower than maritime standards.""

Marcus Vance leaned in, adjusting his safety glasses. His jaw dropped. ""That’s impossible. Apex Contracting provided certified mill test reports from Bethlehem Steel!""

""Mill reports can be forged with a PDF editor and a five-hundred-dollar bribe to an off-site inspector, Marcus,"" Nora retorted, running her gloved thumb over a rough, pitted seam along the weld. ""Harrison Cross knew this steel was garbage when he approved the substitution. Apex saved twelve million dollars on procurement. Vanguard Structural got a two-million-dollar kickback routed through an offshore shell company in Grand Cayman, and Julian Thorne got the leverage he needed to show cost savings during Ethan's father's final board audit.""

Ethan’s fists clenched at his sides. ""They gambled five thousand lives for fourteen million dollars.""

""It gets worse, Ethan,"" Nora said, turning to face him. Her expression was grim, illuminated by the harsh blue sparks of an emergency welder working fifty feet away. ""This beam isn't an isolated defect. The identical steel grade was installed along the entire forty-second, forty-third, and forty-fourth floor transfer trusses. If we just weld support plates over 41-B, the load will simply shift upward and rip the forty-second floor apart during the first major winter blizzard.""

""How long do we have?"" Ethan asked, his voice steady but dark.

""Three weeks,"" Nora replied without hesitation. ""Before the freezing temperatures contract the metal and turn those micro-fractures into catastrophic splits. We have to install external hydraulic damper braces from the thirty-ninth floor to the forty-fifth floor to bypass the weak steel entirely.""

Marcus threw his hands in the air. ""External hydraulic dampers? That requires an experimental seismic design! The city planning commission will never approve the permits in three weeks! It took six months just to get the permits for the elevator shafts!""

""The permits won't be an issue,"" Nora said coldly, pulling a rolled blueprint from her technical harness. She unrolled it across an equipment crate, holding the corners down with heavy steel bolts. ""Because the patent for the multi-axis fluid viscous damper was already approved by the United States Patent Office two years ago. Under Harrison Cross’s name.""

Ethan stepped closer, studying the intricate mathematical formulas and fluid dynamic schematics drawn across the vellum. ""Your design.""

""My design,"" Nora confirmed, her voice laced with quiet fury. ""Harrison stole the blueprints from my personal hard drive the night before he fired me. He registered the patent under Vanguard’s intellectual property umbrella. He thought it was just an academic novelty that would sit in a vault. But it was designed specifically for narrow, high-wind supertall towers. If we use this design, we can reinforce the exterior framework without shutting down the lower thirty floors or triggering a mandatory city condemnation order.""

""We can’t build it without the patent license,"" Marcus pointed out nervously. ""Vanguard will hit us with an emergency federal injunction within twenty-four hours. They’ll halt construction and sue us for patent infringement.""

""Let them sue,"" Ethan said, a dangerous spark flashing in his eyes. ""Because the moment Harrison Cross steps into a federal courtroom to defend that patent, Nora will be sitting across the aisle with her original sketchbooks, digital timestamped logs, and Columbia University thesis research.""

Suddenly, the floor beneath their boots let out a sickening, metallic GROAN.

It wasn't a subtle sound. It was the sound of tortured steel giving up.

A sharp, explosive BANG—like the crack of a high-caliber rifle—echoed from the northeast corner of the floor. A six-inch steel bolt sheared completely in half, ricocheting off the ceiling beam and smashing into a stack of scaffolding.

""EVACUATE THE FLOOR!"" Marcus screamed, scrambling backward toward the emergency stairwell.

The scaffolding above Nora began to shudder. A two-hundred-pound steel beam resting on the temporary platform slipped its chain, tilting precariously toward her head.

""Nora! Look out!""

Ethan moved with blinding speed. He lunged across the concrete, grabbing Nora by the waist and tackling her hard against the safety barricade just as the heavy steel beam crashed down onto the very spot she had been standing seconds before. The impact shattered the concrete lip, sending a shower of pulverized stone tumbling into the abyss below.

They landed together on the rough deck, Ethan's heavy frame shielding Nora completely. His arms were wrapped around her like a fortress, his heart hammering violently against her ribcage. The smell of dust, ozone, and Ethan’s crisp cedarwood cologne filled her senses.

For several agonizing seconds, neither of them moved. Nora looked up into Ethan’s face. His jaw was clenched, his hair disheveled, his eyes wild with terror—not for his tower, but for her.

""Are you hit?"" Ethan breathed, his hands quickly checking her shoulders, her arms, her neck. ""Nora, talk to me. Are you hurt?""

""I’m... I’m okay,"" Nora managed to whisper, her hands resting against his broad chest. She could feel the wild, frantic rhythm of his heartbeat beneath his canvas jacket. ""Ethan... you just threw yourself under a falling beam.""

""You’re my wife,"" Ethan murmured, his voice thick with raw, unguarded emotion that shattered his usual billionaire armor. ""Contract or not, I don't let my people get crushed.""

He helped her up, his hands lingering on her waist for a fraction of a second longer than strictly necessary. Nora looked down at the crushed steel beam on the floor. If she had been standing there two seconds longer, she would have been dead.

And as she looked at the severed chain that had held the beam, her blood ran cold.

The links hadn't snapped from weight fatigue.

They had been cleanly cut with a mechanical angle grinder.

""Ethan,"" Nora whispered, pointing at the severed chain. ""That wasn't an accident. Someone tried to kill us.""

Ethan stared at the cut link, his eyes darkening into pure, unbridled fury. ""Julian,"" he hissed through clenched teeth. ""He knows what we're looking for.""

May you like

Ethan grabbed Nora’s hand, lacing his fingers tightly through hers. ""We're leaving. Now. And from this moment on, you don't leave my sight for a single second.""
