Chapter 8 - Showdown in the Clouds

At 8:50 AM, the fiftieth-floor boardroom of Westbrook Urban Development was packed with sixteen of Chicago’s most influential financiers, hedge fund managers, and legal counsels.

At the head of the long marble table sat Harrison Vance, looking immaculate in a charcoal-gray three-piece suit. Beside him sat Darien’s twenty-eight-year-old sister, Julianna Westbrook, looking pale, anxious, and deeply confused.

“Harrison, are you sure Darien isn’t coming?” Julianna whispered, nervously twisting her engagement ring. “He always attends the quarterly review. He wouldn’t just vanish.”

“Julianna, darling, I told you,” Harrison said in a soothing, paternal tone, patting her hand. “Darien has had a complete mental breakdown. He spent last night wandering the South Side slums, hallucinating about his childhood. The stress of the Tokyo merger was too much. For his own protection, we have to relieve him of executive authority.”

The board members murmured in quiet agreement.

Harrison stood up and tapped his crystal water glass with a silver fountain pen.

“Ladies and gentlemen, let us call this emergency session to order,” Harrison announced with booming confidence. “As acting COO and holding fifty-two percent of voting shares via my personal equity and Miss Julianna Westbrook’s executive proxy, I move to immediately terminate Darien Westbrook’s tenure as Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board.”

“Seconded,” announced Arthur Sterling, the corrupt City Building Commissioner who sat at the far corner of the table.

“All in favor—” Harrison began, raising his hand with a triumphant grin.

BANG!

The heavy mahogany double doors of the boardroom were thrown open with such violence that they ricocheted off the drywall.

Every head in the room snapped toward the entrance.

Standing in the doorway, rain-drenched, his knuckles bruised, but his head held high like a Roman general, was Darien Westbrook.

“Before you cast that vote, Harrison,” Darien’s voice echoed across the expansive room like a rolling crack of thunder, “I think the board would like to hear what you did with the forty-two million dollars you stole from our corporate reserves.”

Julianna gasped, leaping to her feet. “Darien!”

Harrison’s face twisted into pure, murderous rage. “Security! Remove this trespasser immediately!”

Two armed guards from Ironclad Security lunged forward to seize Darien’s arms, but Darien didn’t back down.

“Touch me,” Darien roared, pointing directly into the guards’ faces, “and every single one of you will be charged as co-conspirators in a federal racketeering indictment! Look behind me!”

Through the open doorway strode four armed officers of the United States Marshals Service, led by a tall, stern federal investigator in a dark trench coat.

Harrison’s knees visibly buckled. “What… what is this?”

“Harrison Vance,” the lead US Marshal announced, holding up an official blue-sealed document. “We have an emergency federal search warrant issued forty-five minutes ago by Judge Evelyn Carter of the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals. Westbrook Urban Development’s corporate accounts, domestic development subsidiaries, and private communications have been placed under immediate federal receivership.”

Gasps erupted around the boardroom. Board members scrambled to their feet, knocking over water glasses and papers in sheer panic.

“This is ridiculous!” Harrison shrieked, backing away toward the windows. “I hold fifty-two percent of the voting shares! Julianna signed her proxy to me! You cannot remove me!”

“Julianna,” Darien said, walking slowly past the panicked board members until he stood directly in front of his younger sister.

Julianna looked at her brother’s bruised knuckles, then at Harrison’s frantic, sweat-streaked face. “Darien… what did he do?”

Darien took a small digital audio recorder from his pocket and pressed play.

Harrison’s unmistakable voice echoed through the high-end boardroom speakers:

‘Tell Marcus to cut the heat to building 4B tonight. Let the old roaches freeze. If three of them get pneumonia, the rest will pack their bags and flee before Friday. That forty-two million in relocation funds is ours, Marcus. Darien is too stupid to ever check the offshore routing.’

The recording stopped.

Absolute, horrifying silence engulfed the room.

Julianna’s hand flew to her mouth. She looked down at the massive diamond engagement ring on her finger, ripped it off with violent disgust, and threw it squarely into Harrison’s face.

“You monster,” Julianna sobbed, tears spilling down her cheeks. “I revoke my proxy. Effective immediately. I vote every single one of my shares with my brother!”

“That gives me sixty-four percent of the voting power,” Darien said, turning to face the frozen, trembling Harrison Vance.

Darien leaned across the marble table, staring into the eyes of the man who had tried to destroy everything he loved.

“Harrison,” Darien whispered, his voice calm, cold, and absolute. “You are fired.”

The federal marshals moved in. Within ten seconds, Harrison Vance’s hands were cuffed behind his back. As they dragged him past the marble table, he screamed obscenities, kicking and thrashing, until the elevator doors shut and swallowed his cries into the shaft below.

Darien turned to the remaining board members, whose faces were pale with terror.

“Gentlemen,” Darien said, adjusting his cuffs. “Meeting adjourned. I have an appointment on the South Side.”
