Chapter 7 - Blood on the Marble

What followed was a symphony of precise, merciless violence.

Ethan didn't duck or panic. He moved through the shadows of his own penthouse like a ghost born from the dark. Two gunshots cracked through the room, followed immediately by the heavy thud of a body collapsing over the glass coffee table.

""Flank left!"" one of the intruders barked, but his order was cut short by a brutal crunch of breaking bone. Ethan had closed the distance in silence, disarming the second man and driving a combat blade beneath the collarbone before the shooter could even raise his submachine gun.

I crawled on my belly across the slick floor, glass shards cutting into my palms, driven entirely by maternal instinct. ""Sam! Dante!""

The nursery door flew open. Dante stepped out into the hallway, a heavy shotgun leveled at his hip, his left arm wrapped protectively around Sam. My baby was screaming, terrified by the deafening noise, but he was completely uninjured.

""Norah! Get inside!"" Dante bellowed, firing a round down the main corridor. The blast blew a mercenary backward into the wall, shredding the drywall into powder.

Before I could reach the threshold, a heavy boot slammed into my shoulder, pinning me to the floor.

A tall, wiry man with a scar running from his ear to his lip grinned down at me, grabbing a fistful of my hair and yanking my head back. A serrated knife gleamed in his hand.

""Look what we have here,"" the man hissed, pressing the cold blade against the soft hollow of my throat. ""The little stray Hayes brought home to play house with!""

""Let her go, Leo,"" Ethan’s voice cut through the darkness.

The room suddenly fell into an eerie, suffocating silence.

The other four intruders lay dead or dying across the travertine. Only the man holding me was left standing.

Ethan walked into the faint light filtering from the terrace. His shirt was torn, blood splattered across his cheek and chest—none of it his own. His gun was lowered at his side. He looked calm. Terrifyingly, inhumanly calm.

""Back off, Hayes!"" Leo snarled, pressing the knife harder. A thin line of blood welled beneath the blade on my throat. ""Drop the piece, or I carve her like a Thanksgiving turkey right in front of you! Let me walk to the elevator, or she dies!""

I looked at Ethan through my tears. I saw no hesitation in his eyes. No fear.

""Do you know why I let you reach the fiftieth floor, Leo?"" Ethan asked softly, taking a slow step forward.

""Don't move! I swear to God I'll do it!""

""Because,"" Ethan continued, his voice sending a chill down my spine that froze the scream in my throat, ""if I killed you in the lobby, Don Moretti wouldn't get the message. I needed one of you to look into my eyes so you could understand something fundamental before your heart stops beating.""

""You're bluffing—""

""I don't bluff about what belongs to me.""

Ethan didn't raise his gun.

Instead, Dante, who had stepped silently into the shadow behind Leo, drove the butt of his shotgun directly into the back of Leo’s skull.

The knife slipped from my throat. Leo stumbled forward with a gasp of shock.

Before he could regain his balance, Ethan caught him by the throat with one hand, lifting the grown man several inches off the ground. With a single, fluid pivot, Ethan slammed Leo face-first into the glass railing overlooking the fifty-story drop into Lake Michigan.

The glass groaned under the impact.

""Tell Moretti,"" Ethan whispered into Leo’s ear, ""that tomorrow morning, I am taking his docks, his warehouses, and his life. And tell him Norah Davis sent you.""

May you like

Ethan released his grip.

A terrifying scream echoed down into the fog as Leo vanished into the empty air.
