Chapter 5 - The Midnight Convoy

"We have to go to the police," Lupita said, reaching for her phone on the counter. "Right now, Miguel. We hand them the hospital bracelet, the note, and the photo."

Miguel caught her wrist gently. "Think for a second, Lupita. Who is the deputy commissioner for this district? Javier's brother-in-law. If Javier has kept a four-year-old boy hidden for six months, half the local patrol cars are turning a blind eye. If we walk into the precinct with a scrap of paper, that evidence disappears into an incinerator before morning, and we end up in a ditch."

"So what do we do? We can't leave that child out there!"

"We go to Don Ernesto," Miguel said firmly.

Lupita stared at him as if he had lost his mind. "Ernesto? The man who just threatened to throw us into the street?"

"He's a bitter, miserable tyrant, Lupita, but he loved Sofia, and he worshipped that boy. When Mateo vanished, Ernesto aged twenty years in a month. He doesn't know. Javier made him believe his daughter died, made him believe his grandson was stolen by strangers, all while stripping Ernesto’s assets out from under him."

Miguel walked over to Canela. The mother dog watched him with calm, intelligent eyes. She seemed to understand the shift in the room. When Miguel picked up the worn leather leash from the top shelf of the closet, she struggled to her feet without a sound, licking the head of the pale puppy one last time before stepping toward him.

"You stay here with the puppies, Lupita. Keep the door deadbolted and don't answer for anyone except me."

"I'm not letting you go alone," Lupita countered fiercely, grabbing her jacket. "If Ernesto turns violent, you need a witness. We put the puppies in the cab of your rig. The heating works off the battery, and nobody touches that truck."

Ten minutes later, the box with its six fragile lives was secured on the passenger floor of Miguel’s semi-truck, nestled in blankets. Miguel led Canela down the back fire escape into the rain-soaked alley. The sky was pitch black, a summer thunderstorm brewing over the eastern ridge.

They walked around to the front of the complex where Ernesto’s ground-floor apartment sat behind iron security bars. A dim light flickered from the living room window—the glow of an old television.

Miguel took a deep breath, raised his fist, and knocked on the security gate.

"Ernesto!" Miguel called out, keeping his voice low but sharp. "We have Sofia’s dog. And we know where Mateo is."
