Chapter 8 - The Last Clean Chance

Daniel’s mistake was believing everyone could be frightened into obedience.

The accountant he had threatened for years finally contacted her attorney.

The transportation supervisor followed.

Then the former contractor from Lucy’s school gate was arrested on an unrelated outstanding warrant and agreed to speak through counsel.

The scattered pieces began to connect.

Daniel had directed the warehouse preparations.

He had sent the contractor to learn whether Rachel and Lucy remained in Chicago.

He was searching for a way to force the return of records investigators already possessed.

Vincent received updates through Miriam.

He hated waiting.

He did it anyway.

On Friday morning, Rachel went to give a formal statement with her attorney present.

She wore the navy dress she had bought for a job interview after Aaron died.

Vincent met her outside the federal building.

“You don’t have to stay,” she told him.

“I know.”

He handed her coffee.

She accepted it.

Three hours later, she emerged looking exhausted.

“They asked whether Aaron ever took money from the company.”

Vincent’s expression tightened.

“They have to examine everything.”

“I know. I hated it.”

He nodded.

She took his hand.

“I told the truth.”

“That’s enough for today.”

Across the street, a horn sounded twice.

Rachel flinched.

Vincent moved instinctively closer, then stopped himself from steering her.

She noticed.

Together, they walked to the waiting car.

That afternoon, Daniel sent a final message.

You still have one clean chance. Come alone.

Attached was an address near the lake.

Vincent forwarded it to Ortiz.

Then he turned his phone off and helped Lucy assemble a cardboard grocery store.

She appointed him cashier.

He was terrible at it.

“You gave me too many dollars,” she informed him.

“I’m new.”

“You have to practice being regular.”

Rachel laughed from the kitchen.

Vincent looked toward her, and for a moment the room felt almost ordinary.

By evening, investigators had confirmed Daniel’s location through several sources.

They did not share operational details.

Vincent waited with Rachel while Lucy watched a movie beside Naomi.

At nine seventeen, Miriam called.

“Daniel is in custody.”

Vincent sat down.

There was no triumphant rush.

No satisfaction large enough to match what had happened.

Only a sudden awareness of how tired he was.

Rachel read his face.

“Is it over?”

“He’s arrested.”

She closed her eyes.

“That’s a beginning.”

“Yes.”

Later, Ortiz explained that officers had recovered Daniel’s phones, travel documents, and additional business records. He had been preparing to leave the country.

The address he sent Vincent was another attempt to isolate him.

This time, nobody had gone where Daniel wanted.

After the call, Rachel stepped onto the apartment’s tiny balcony.

Vincent followed when she nodded.

Traffic moved below them. Somewhere, a siren rose and faded.

“I thought I’d feel Aaron closer when they caught him,” she said.

Vincent leaned against the railing.

“Do you?”

“No.”

He waited.

“I just miss him.”

Vincent looked out over the street.

“You can.”

She turned toward him.

“I know.”

“I mean with me here.”

Her eyes filled.

He did not try to replace the person she had lost. He did not offer a future as payment for forgetting the past.

He stood beside her until she reached for him.

Inside, Lucy shouted that the movie was getting to the best part.

Rachel laughed through her tears.

“We’re being summoned.”

“Sounds serious.”

“It usually is.”

They went back inside.

Lucy patted the space between herself and her mother.

Vincent sat.

A small hand found his.

Halfway through the movie, she fell asleep.

Rachel rested her head against his shoulder.

And the man who had once confused fear with respect sat very still, holding something he could lose.

For once, he did not mistake that feeling for weakness.

Before dawn, his phone lit with one more message from Miriam.

We need to discuss your signatures.

Vincent read it.

May you like

Then he answered.

Tomorrow. All of them.
