Chapter 4 - The Shattered Glass

The office was so quiet Emma could hear the ticking of the antique grandfather clock in the corner like the strike of an executioner's axe.

'Appease existing commercial tenant with long-term lease guarantee... to prevent historical landmark designation filing.'

The words burned into her retinas.

Every memory of the last two months twisted into a grotesque, calculated lie.

The first night in the rain. James asking about the Brooklyn Bridge book. James showing up every evening with sandwiches and coffee. James building the children's reading loft on the third floor.

It wasn't a romance. It wasn't a billionaire falling for a humble bookseller.

It was a masterclass in corporate pacification.

If Bellwether Books had applied for historical landmark status—a process Mrs. Anderson had been preparing with the local preservation society before the sale—Project Avalon would have been tied up in municipal litigation for five years, costing Blackwell Holdings hundreds of millions of dollars.

By buying the building through a secret trust and offering an astonishing lease, James had convinced Mrs. Anderson and Emma to drop the landmark petition entirely.

And when the time came, he was going to bulldoze the entire building anyway, invoking a manufactured structural clause.

The mahogany doors clicked open.

James walked in, loosening his silk tie with a relaxed smile on his face. "Sorry about that, Emma. The European markets were reacting to the central bank rates, and—"

He stopped.

His smile vanished instantly as his eyes locked onto the open portfolio on his drafting table, and then onto Emma’s face.

Emma was shaking so violently she had to grip the edge of the walnut desk to keep from falling. Her eyes were bloodshot, filled with a blinding, agonizing fury.

"Emma," James said, his voice dropping into a register of sheer, breathless panic.

"Phase Two," Emma whispered, her voice cracking like thin ice. "Demolition and access road expansion for underground parking."

James took a step forward, his hands raised in surrender. "Emma, let me explain. Please. Don't look at that out of context."

"Out of context?!" she screamed, her voice echoing off the glass walls of the penthouse office. "You wrote the memo, James! In your own handwriting!"

She grabbed the leather portfolio and hurled it across the room. Blueprints, legal memos, and site maps exploded into the air, fluttering down across the Persian rug like black-and-white confetti.

"You came into my shop pretending you forgot a book for your daughter!" she cried, tears spilling over her cheeks. "You sat on my floor drinking coffee out of chipped mugs! You made me believe you cared about me!"

"I do care about you!" James roared, his own composure shattering completely as he crossed the room, reaching out to grab her shoulders.

"Don't you dare touch me!" Emma shrieked, backing away until her spine hit the floor-to-ceiling glass window overlooking the city.

"Emma, listen to me!" James pleaded, his blue eyes wild and desperate. "That memo was drafted six months ago! Before I ever met you! Before I ever set foot inside Bellwether!"

"And when did you decide to cancel Phase Two, James?" Emma asked, her voice dropping into a lethal, quiet hiss. "Where is the revised blueprint? Where is the cancellation memo?"

James froze.

The silence that stretched between them was the most devastating answer she had ever received in her life.
