Chapter 8 - The Awakening

The morning sun broke over Manhattan in a brilliant, cloudless sky of azure and gold, casting warm ribbons of light across Room 414.
The birds chirped softly outside the window, their sweet melodies replacing the violent howling of the previous night's storm.
I was sitting in the armchair beside the bed, holding a cup of black coffee, watching Emily's eyelashes flutter.
A soft, low sigh escaped her lips.
Her fingers twitched against the cotton blanket.
Slowly, her hazel eyes opened, blinking against the bright morning light, searching the ceiling with sleepy confusion.
"Emily," I whispered, rising from my chair and leaning over the railing.
Her gaze shifted slowly toward my voice.
She froze.
Her pupils dilated in disbelief, her breath catching softly in her throat as she took in my face, my disheveled hair, and the wrinkled white dress shirt I had worn for twenty-four hours.
"Nicholas?" she breathed, her voice raspy and dry from the breathing tube.
"I'm here, Em," I said, my voice thick with unshed tears as I gently wrapped my hand around hers. "I'm right here."
A look of sudden, frantic terror crossed her features as her memory rushed back.
"Lily..." she gasped, struggling to lift her head from the pillow. "Where is Lily? Who has my baby?"
"Shh, shh, look right here, Em," I comforted her, turning slightly to reveal the vinyl sofa beneath the window.
Lily was curled up under a plush fleece blanket, snoring softly with a stuffed bear tucked beneath her chin, completely safe, warm, and sound asleep.
Emily’s head fell back against the pillow, tears of immense relief spilling over her eyelashes onto the white linen.
"How..." she choked out, looking back at me. "How did you find us? I tried so hard to hide..."
"You didn't hide well enough from your daughter," I said, a faint, tender smile touching my lips.
I picked up the crumpled five-dollar bill from the bedside table, placing it gently into Emily's palm.
"She found me in the lobby yesterday afternoon, Em. She offered me five dollars to buy her mommy a new heart."
Emily pressed the crumpled bill against her trembling lips, weeping with raw, unadulterated gratitude.
"She saved me," Emily sobbed softly. "My brave little girl..."
"She saved both of us, Emily," I whispered, leaning down until my forehead rested against hers.
"Why didn't you tell me about her six years ago? Why did you run away?"
Emily looked into my eyes, her gaze filled with the lingering pain of the past.
"I was terrified, Nicholas," she whispered honestly. "I watched your father get buried. I saw the car bombs, the bullet holes in your penthouse windows, the paranoia that turned your eyes into ice. I couldn't bring a child into that darkness."
She reached up, her frail fingers touching the side of my face with heartbreaking tenderness.
"I loved you too much to watch our baby become another soldier in your war."
"There is no war anymore, Emily," I said, my voice ringing with absolute, unbreakable certainty.
I pointed to the gold signet ring resting on the bedside table.
"I signed over the entire organization to Matteo and Dante at dawn. The legitimate shipping lines have been transferred into a blind educational trust for Lily. The criminal enterprises have been dismantled or severed permanently."
Emily stared at me, her eyes wide with shock.
"You... you gave up the Reign empire?"
May you like
"I didn't give up an empire, Em," I replied, pressing a gentle kiss to her knuckles.
"I gave up a prison. The only empire I care about is standing in this room."
